With the recent increases in temperature here lately in Skagit Valley, along with the rest of the Pacific Northwest, many people are looking for ways to cool down and find some refreshment. And what better way to cool down than to grab a cold brew or to enjoy a glass of wine out on the patio!

Next Wednesday, July 21^st, five local Mount Vernon Restaurants will hold wine-tastings from 6-8pm. For only $5 you can try 4 samples at one of the participating vendors. Some venues will also be offering discounted appetizers to munch on while you are enjoying your vino.

Participants include: The Porterhouse, Trumpeter Public House, Empire Alehouse, Pacioni’s Pizzeria and the recently re-opened and revamped Ristretto.

So whether you enjoy white or red it makes no difference, we just hope to see you there!

And If wines not your thing than stay tuned for the 8^th Annual Porterhouse Brewfest that will be held August 14^th in downtown Mount Vernon.

The event starts at 2pm and will feature 20+ microbreweries from all around the Pacific Northwest. Enjoy several tastes of beer, great food & live entertainment performed by one of 3 live bands that will be performing that day

Tickets are $20 if purchased in advance / $24 at the gate.

(This includes 5 tastes; additional tastes can be purchased at added cost).

For all you “Music Loving”Skagitonians make sure to head out to Anacortes for the 9^th Annual “What The Heck Fest” this Friday through Saturday. Featuring over 30+ musicians and other various performers, this event provides a great way to get out and hear some wonderful entertainment and soak up plenty of that amazing sunshine in the process. Performances are held at a variety of locations throughout Anacortes, including: the Port Warehouse, Brown Lantern, and Causland Park. So make sure to check the schedule on the What the Heck Fest website to find show times & venues.

Also, don’t miss out on the 30^thAnnual Anacortes Shipwreck Day, which is being held Saturday from 8am to 4pm. The annual rummage sale takes place right on the streets of Commercial Ave in downtown Anacortes.  Definitely worth checking out and you never know maybe you will stumble across that perfect treasure you been searching for!  Come have a look for yourself!

Head out to Anacortes this weekend to enjoy some great music, art and of course find some hidden treasures; come experience some Anacortes culture-You won’t be disappointed.

Flag Day yesterday at Big Lake

The 4^th of July is only 18 days away! Here in Big Lake we have a longstanding tradition to celebrate our nation’s Independence Day on the day prior. Every year on the 3^rd of July as many as 60,000+ people from around Skagit Valley flock to Big Lake in order to witness the annual Big Lake Fireworks Display, put on by our wonderful volunteer fire department. The fireworks display and festivities out at Big Lake is one of the biggest summertime celebrations within Skagit County!

One of the coolest things about the Big Lake celebration is how excited and eager the entire community is to celebrate. From setting up tents and decorations to getting the boat ready to hit the water; everyone goes all out gearing up for the holiday.

And what symbolizes our Independence Day more than FLAGS!!!!

For the last few years, our Big Lake community has increasingly been strewn with countless flags all around the lake.

This beautification of our community can be greatly attributed and in thanks to the amazing young men who belong to the Big Lake Scouts, Troop 427; whom for the past 4 years have been operating a Flag Service for residents of Big Lake.

Get Your Flag Ready for the 4th!

The scout’s goal is to ultimately place a flag at the driveway of each resident within our community.

The flags are put up during the morning of each of the following holidays (Memorial, Independence, Veterans, and Flag Day) and then take down at sundown of that day. Flags are then carefully and properly stored by the scouts.

The donations that the scouts receive from their services go to support not only outfitting the members of Troop 427, but also go to help purchase equipment, fund scholarships and support troop outings and ceremonies.

With all the flags flying around the lake, it couldn’t look more beautiful. This patriotic display truly allows for our community to exhibit our national pride and show support not only for our country but our local community as well.

So please help to support the Big Lake Troops and this wonderful program that they have made available for those living within the Big Lake Community.
